Besides matcha latte, ice cream and chocolates (yum), you&#8217;ll also find matcha in chips, pizza, burgers,\u00a0pasta, cola and beer (erm, why??).<\/p><p>If you thought that matcha is a Japanese thing, you would be mostly right, since that is a Japanese word.\u00a0<\/p><p>What you might not know is that in Korea, it&#8217;s called malcha (\ub9d0\ucc28).\u00a0<\/p><p>And Jeju, with its volcanic terrain, clean air and water, and moderate climate with distinct seasons, is the tea powerhouse of Korea that is catching up with Japan&#8217;s Uji tea region.\u00a0<\/p><p>For consistency, we&#8217;ll use the Japanese &#8220;matcha&#8221; since that is more common internationally. But if you want to impress the Korean tea community, say &#8220;malcha&#8221; rather than &#8220;matcha&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5346606 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5346606\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Jeju tea vs Coffee<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a7b247b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a7b247b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>On our first trip to Jeju, I took my tea-loving wife to a ceremony at Orteas Tea Farm, one of Jeju&#8217;s many tea fields. Unlike the madhouse that can be Osulloc, this one was quiet and tranquil&#8211;everything a teahouse should be.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I am a coffee person, preferring Americanos like many Koreans. Except Koreans seem to have a diehard attachment to their Iced Americanos in all seasons, even winter. There&#8217;s even a saying that translates to something like &#8220;Even if I freeze to death, iced americano!&#8221; (\uc5bc\uc8fd\uc544 | <span class=\"Y2IQFc\">eoljug-a<\/span>, short for \uc5bc\uc5b4 \uc8fd\uc5b4\ub3c4 \uc544\uc774\uc2a4 \uc544\uba54\ub9ac\uce74\ub178).<\/p>\n<p>But despite my preference for coffee, I gotta say, I really liked the teas that were served up at Orteas, especially the matcha. I&#8217;ve found that Jeju&#8217;s matcha has a distinctively different note than Japanese matcha. It&#8217;s lighter, less bitter, and more subtle.<\/p>\n<p>Since Jeju has so many tea farms that open their doors to visitors, I thought it might be helpful to share what we learned at Orteas, in case you might want to add a tea farm to your DIY itinerary.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f340b38 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"f340b38\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2e839fe elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2e839fe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why Jeju Tea Tastes Different<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-925edf5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"925edf5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Before we get into where to go and what to do, let&#8217;s talk about why Jeju tea is worth seeking out in the first place.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">You already know from the Hallasan article that this island is basically a giant volcano. That volcanic soil \u2014 porous, mineral-rich, slightly acidic \u2014 turns out to be ideal for tea cultivation. The same geology that means you can&#8217;t grow rice in most parts of Jeju also means you <em>can<\/em> grow exceptional tea.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Add to that:<\/p><ul class=\"[li_&amp;]:mb-0 [li_&amp;]:mt-1.5 [li_&amp;]:gap-1.5 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc flex flex-col gap-2 pl-8 mb-3\"><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Clean water<\/strong> filtered through layers of volcanic rock (yes, the same water that becomes Samdasoo)<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Ocean mist<\/strong> rolling in from all sides, naturally humidifying the tea leaves<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Hallasan&#8217;s shadow<\/strong> \u2014 the mountain creates microclimates and fog that shade the tea plants without human intervention<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">The result? Jeju tea tends to be smoother and less astringent than Japanese varieties. Where Uji matcha can hit you with that intense, almost seaweed-like vegetal punch, Jeju matcha is gentler \u2014 lighter, subtler, with less bitterness on the finish.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Is it better? That&#8217;s subjective. The difference is in how the leaves are processed after harvest. Green tea is minimally oxidized, which keeps it, well, green.<\/p><p>Within the green tea world, matcha is special because:<\/p><ol><li>The plants are shaded for 15-20 days before harvest, which boosts chlorophyll and gives the leaves a richer, sweeter flavor<\/li><li>The leaves are stone-ground into a fine powder<\/li><li>You consume the whole leaf, not just an infusion of it<\/li><\/ol><p>That last point matters. When you drink regular green tea, you&#8217;re steeping leaves in water and then discarding them. O&#8217;Sulloc is the biggest name in Jeju tea \u2014 owned by Amorepacific, the cosmetics giant behind Innisfree. Their tea fields are the largest on the island, covering over 330 hectares.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>The good:<\/strong> The fields are genuinely beautiful. Rolling rows of tea bushes against the backdrop of Hallasan, especially in spring when everything is impossibly green. Entry is free. The matcha soft-serve is excellent. You can walk through the fields and take all the photos you want.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>The bad:<\/strong> It&#8217;s a zoo. Tour buses disgorge school groups by the dozen. The &#8220;museum&#8221; is really just a gift shop with a few tea-related displays. The caf\u00e9 line can take 20 minutes. Finding a seat is a competitive sport.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>The vibe:<\/strong> Less &#8220;tranquil tea ceremony&#8221; and more &#8220;food court at a popular mall.&#8221;<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">If you go, go early \u2014 like, when it opens at 9 AM \u2014 or late in the afternoon when the tour buses have moved on. And don&#8217;t expect a meditative experience. Small family operation. Quiet. Reservation required.<\/p><p>The owner, Wonhee Lee, selected a site 300 meters above sea level in Seonheul-ri specifically for its microclimate \u2014 the elevation creates temperature swings between day and night that concentrate flavor in the leaves.<\/p><p>The tea ceremony here includes four varieties: green tea, black tea, <em>hojicha<\/em> (roasted green tea), and matcha. Each is grown and processed on-site.
