So nowadays, South Korea become kind of popular, right? Because of like K-pop, K-drama, K-pop Demon Hunters. So South Korea is a beautiful country located in East Asia, near Japan, China. And the size is roughly similar to Portugal in Europe. So it’s quite a small the population here is 52 million in a very small country. So now… I can talk about Jeju a little bit. So for Jeju, it’s the largest island of South Korea. The size is similar to like the Maui in Hawaii. From east to west, it’s around 73 kilometer. And from the north to south, it’s around 31 kilometer. So it sounds quite small, right? we have a big mountain in the center, the highest, tallest mountain in Korea. And then you might think, then why Jeju is so special? Why is it so unique compared to like mainland South Korea? First of all, in Jeju, we have different historical backgrounds. maybe have you heard of Joseon dynasty, Korea dynasty, like three kingdoms period?

Ed (02:38)

Yeah, anyone who has, Netflix probably knows about the Joseon dynasty. And it’s like. One of the many reasons why I love Jeju is like it really reminds me of Hawaii where I spent a lot of time as a younger person and so yeah, you talked about the volcanic rocks and the mountains and the hills it’s like it there are some parts of Jeju that really really looks like Hawaii and so it’s like if I’m not paying attention sometimes I can I forget that oh, this is not Hawaii. This is Jeju. I think we should really talk about the biggest and most impressive one, the most dominant feature of Jeju. The one feature that if you’re on a ferry on the sea, you can see Jeju long before you arrive in Jeju. that’s Hallasan, which sits right in the middle of the island. Let’s go ahead and talk about Hallasan a bit more.

Soraya (06:21)

Yeah, so Hallasan is the tallest mountain in South Korea. It’s 1,947 meters above the sea. It doesn’t sound very tall, but when you try to climbing up to the top, it is. You’ve done that. You know how hard it was. The volcano, it’s not active now. Good, luckily. So it’s a dormant volcano. And the last eruption was like 1,000 years

Ed (06:51)

Yep. it also dominates Jeju culture and history. and even down to like, I was looking at a map of, Jeju and like,

Ed (07:08)

the roads networks, like nothing cuts right through the middle. Well, for obvious reasons, there’s a big old mountain right in the middle.

Ed (07:15)

yeah, and so not only is Hallasan influences the way the roads work and the history and the creation myths, it also affects the weather on the island. as a person who lives on Jeju, can you tell us a little bit more about that?

Soraya (07:33)

You’ve heard that the weather in Jeju changes every second. I’m living in the northern part of the island. And sometimes in the north, it’s raining, cloudy. But when I go through the road from the north to the south, Like middle parts of the mountain. Then you’re see actually the weather, the clouds is moving and then the weather changing. So even if it’s raining in the north, south can be very sunny.

Soraya (08:03)

In the winter still, like in Seogwipo it’s a lot milder weather. It’s not too cold. We never get minus something in Celsius. but the wind, because this is the island of the wind, so it can get really, really cold.

Ed (08:23)

So that’s Hallasan. It’s a big old mountain that helped create the island and it still dominates everything about the island. The weather, it dominates the history, the stories that people still tell, it dominates the road network. And so coming to Jeju, you got to really think about Hallasan for practical things like how to drive from one place to another. And it also dictates just because one place is raining, you could actually go to another part of island and you’ll be just fine. The weather changes very quickly, like you said. So all these are very valuable ideas to hold in your head, and to be flexible when you plan your travel.
