This episode dives deep into the world of the haenyeo (해녀)—the women divers who harvest seafood without air tanks, sometimes to depths of 20 meters. Ed and Soraya discuss the Haenyeo Museum in Hado, why it’s located at the site of anti-Japanese protests, and what you’ll learn inside: the evolution of diving outfits (they once dove naked before Confucian officials made them cover up), the bulteok gathering shelters, and the democratic cooperative system that still supports these women. You’ll also hear about the harsh realities of haenyeo life, the three skill levels, why modern women aren’t signing up, and Soraya’s plans to attend Haenyeo School herself. And then this was the place where they gathered together for those protests. So for this reason, we built museum here and then we put all of the culture of woman diver in this museum. Because even though you want to see them harvesting seafood or working in the ocean it’s kind of hard to spot them because they are working early morning so if you still want to see those culture then you have to go this museum So this museum has two floor and then on the rooftop, there’s a viewing place. So you can see all of these beautiful beach, like panoramic view. First floor, we’re gonna start from like the traditional Jeju house in traditional Jeju village so you can have idea of what was their life like. and also like food of woman diver and their outfits. Because on the second floor you can actually see the change of outfit through time.

Ed (03:26)

Right, so I think what you’re referring to is earlier I mentioned I saw them going into the water with their black and orange wetsuits but they didn’t have wetsuits 400 years ago. For that they wore different outfits I remember reading one section about how it was considered very scandalous back then for women to be wearing those kind of outfits. I’m not talking about like bikinis or anything like that. It looks perfectly fine in the modern world but back then in Confucian Korea it was like wow this is a disgrace Did I get that right? Because not everything was in English so I had to translate some of it.

Sora (03:55)

Yes, but actually long before they dive just naked. It was not a weird thing. So the Joseon dynasty, they sent governor to Jeju. And then when the governor arrived, the women, are not fully covered they were shocked right and they forced them to wear something and then that was those like shorts and and I think it was long sleeve right

Ed (04:28)

Yep. It’s like, and then long sleeve. And then sometimes they have like a one strap only to hold up the blouse. and then they’ll wrap their hair up in the same garment and The material is quite thick.

Sora (04:41)

I think if you go into the water and come out with that outfit, it’s gonna be freezing and heavy.

Ed (04:50)

Yes, and the water is already cold so yeah it’s not gonna be fun. one more thing I would like to mention about the the Haenyeo Museum is that there’s actually a trail that you can walk. I think it’s called the Haenyeo Sumisori Gil

Ed (05:08)

You get to see a different facet of the Haenyeo experience. And I don’t know if it’s part of the Haenyeo Museum, but it definitely starts and stops at the Haenyeo Museum. it’s a walk that takes you to the Sehwa Beach and then to the Bulteok the the the stone fire place that they do meetings and then it takes you through all the way to like a walled city or walled town hado hado yeah yeah there

Sora (05:33)

Hado Byulbangjin?

Ed (05:36)

Yes, and they’ll take you through inland through some farms and stuff like that So it really gives you a good view of like what Haenyeos used to do like, okay This is the beach where they went to the water This is where they sat down to meet and clean their seafoods or the harvests of the day Walk further on you see the farms what else about the museum really jumps at you Sora

Sora (05:57)

So my favorite part of explaining things in the museum when I have guests, I’m so proud of the woman divers Haenyeo community. They have their own union on each village and they work all together. So even though you’re sick, you can’t work, they will help you to say, like to get some money for your family. and they put aside some amount of money to build a school or to yeah for the community so I felt like those women they are not selfish. They are community oriented. So they want to help each other out that is my favorite part.

Ed (06:42)

I read a lot about how each Haenyeo cooperative of each village or town, they usually decide things either try to agree and come to a consensus or if there’s a disagreement, will vote on it, which is, guess, a kind of democracy long before Korea became a democracy.

     </details>
      <details id="e-n-accordion-item-9492" class="e-n-accordion-item" >

The Haenyeo Life — Resilience and Hardship

Ed (07:02)

so you said that when you bring guests there, you feel like one of the things that really make you proud is how tight the is and how they have each other’s backs. When you bring them there, what are their thoughts after having spent an hour or two at the Haenyeo Museum?

Sora (07:19)

Mostly they… told me like it’s amazing that those grandmas go to dive even they become like eighty years old, ninety years old because I know one woman diver she’s 88 years old and she still goes diving and she feels free in the water so is one thing most of my visitors are amazed by and the other thing is how harsh their life was.

Ed (07:49)

Can you say more about that? what aspects of difficulty do they face in their lives?

Sora (07:55)

because at the end of the gallery there are lots of video of interviewing of those old woman divers and some of them I remember she told us she gave birth in a boat because she had a contraction in the water so she asked for help coming out in the boat and then gave birth

Ed (08:19)

I’ve read about how they will actually go diving even when they are like, due. But yeah, I didn’t realize that one had actually given birth on the boat. I read about it some books, but I thought those was fiction.

Sora (08:32)

met one guy, the bus driver, he told me he’s the son of a woman diver and he was born that way. So I was like, wow.

Ed (08:40)

Wow. Right. And I know that, in the Bulteok in the… Oh, we should probably say what a Bulteok is. It is basically a shelter by the water that is built using the volcanic stones and it serves to shelter the women from the wind. it’s a place where they set a fire and then they gather around. They gather there before they go out to sea and then they come back, they gather there to have the conversations, process their catch, know, like clean out the seafoods stuff like that. And in the older days, they even have their children there. know, like maybe mothers will nurse their babies with breast milk. Like it’s all done in that women and children only place. Then they go home and next day it starts all over again. they rarely rest. And on top of that, They need to do their house chores. Go… then their job. And then maybe come home and do house chores again. Like, that’s a pretty long day.

Sora (09:30)

Yeah. Yeah. In Jeju, we have saying that it is better to be born as a cow than a woman in Jeju. Because Jeju woman works more than cow.

Ed (09:48)

So where are the men? Where are all the men? Like if the women are doing the house chores and the diving and the food and all that and looking after the children, what do the men do?

Sora (09:55)

I’m not sure if it’s okay to say this because I I talk about this while I’m doing a tour but so lots of Jeju grandma old woman told me please do not marry Jeju men because Jeju men is known for lazy and lots of drinking and also gambling I’m not sure if it’s suitable to talk about this or not.

Ed (10:25)

Okay then. So it sounds like men in general.

Ed (10:34)

I appreciate you being cautious about saying that, but I think you kind of described my father. So without getting too much into details, what you said resonates with me. I definitely come from a line of… both my father and my grandfather could have been Jeju men. And yeah, and so I’ve definitely worked very hard to not have it continue from me down to my sons. But yeah, that resonates with me and that hits home.

Ed (11:06)

so like, guess my mom could have been a Haenyeo because she worked really hard to raise my sister and I. I mean, she didn’t go diving, but she definitely had to like do the household chores by herself and then go to work as a teacher and then come home, have to take care of the kids

Sora (11:21)

that’s why lots of people all around the world love the K-drama on Netflix When Life Gives You Tangerines because we share those micro history so I think that’s why people felt similar

Ed (11:35)

Wait a minute, but that husband in When Life Gives You Tangerines He he was amazing. He was Gwangsik He was like the best husband ever Oh Hagshi the boat captain People who haven’t watched the show have no idea what we’re talking about Okay, that’s fine

Ed (12:00)

Maybe in some future episode we should do an episode on When Life Gives You Tangerines. Much, much later.

Sora (12:05)

right and I want to mention that we have lots of good men in Jeju. it’s just stereotype of like past Jeju men

Ed (12:16)

sometimes you tell me things like about the weather in Jeju the weather changes every second. obviously it’s not true, true, but it is is directionally accurate. So I guess what you said about Jeju man is not absolutely true, but it is directionally accurate.

Sora (12:34)

I also want to talk about Bulteok the place where the shelter where the women divers gather together. It was also a place of education. Because you know for haenyeo we have three different levels. So when you just start it, they save some easy shallow ocean for the beginners. So you said there are three levels. So like the most advanced level, how deep do they go

Sora (13:18)

So the most advanced level, sangun, they can usually go to like 20 meter deep in the ocean and then around two minutes

Ed (13:27)

just blows my mind because 20 meters is deeper than scuba divers go to. I was a diving instructor, we would bring people to about no deeper than 18 meters on scuba gear.

Ed (13:44)

these women, the Sanggun, the higher level people, they are going deeper already than divers. Imagine this, if you are a scuba diver and you’re pretty new, you’re diving, you’re diving and then this person comes off to your side wearing like black and orange, no air tank. And then she’s like getting stuff and you’re like, wow, I’m like…

Ed (14:07)

I’m here with my regulator and my breathing my air from the compressed tank and this woman right here next to me. I’ve never seen that in diving but I can just imagine. It really makes you go like, wow, I’m such a wimp. I need this air tank.

Sora (14:14)

I think that’s why lots of dolphins like to come to the woman diver and then try to play with them

Ed (14:30)

I remember reading something about how sometimes when the dolphins first come, from the further away, they don’t know if it’s a shark or a dolphin until it comes closer. Is there something that the Haenyeo do to increase their chance of coming back safely?

Sora (14:44)

I’m not sure for everyday diving but we do have those blessing or like shamanistic ritual every year. So every year like especially on February they will do ritual for the dragon king for their safe diving and also like safe fishing

Sora (15:06)

And also there is another goddess of the wind. We also have ritual for her so she can seed lots of seafood in the ocean of Jeju

Ed (15:17)

Right. And that’s more about the reproduction cycle of the seafood. So the abalones and the top shell, the conchs and all that kind of stuff. Got it.

Sora (15:25)

So when they do that, sometimes they put the rice inside the paper, wrap it, and then throw this to the ocean.

Ed (15:31)

I’m sure that involves some alcohol too, right? Like makgeolli or something. Of course, it’s Korean after all. So, okay.

Sora (15:38)

Of course, of course. We have lots of traditional Jeju special traditional liquor, alcohol as well.

Ed (15:46)

Yes. Yeah, So you told me once that you actually did free diving. Now, was this related to the Haenyeo or is it totally different?

Sora (15:58)

It’s similar, similar. What they’re doing is like free diving but they don’t use those snorkel. And then they have like special mask which is a lot more difficult to use. So I feel like why don’t they use this snorkel? It’s easier. But they told me the traditional one is the best for harvesting seafood,

Ed (16:21)

Wow. So what was it like doing the freediving? How deep could you go? Are you advanced level at 20 meters?

Sora (16:31)

No, I am just level 2, so I just did 10 meter.

Sora (16:37)

Yeah and it was really really difficult and scary for me. So I cannot imagine how they stay in the water and then harvest the things. Because I know how to free dive but when I went to like Haenyeo experiences it is very hard to spot and catch.

Ed (16:42)

whoa, that, that sounds very interesting. What is a Haenyeo experiences?

Sora (17:08)

the Haenyeo experiences is that some of the Haenyeo they will teach you how to harvest the seafood and a little bit of free diving, and then you go into the sea farm, seafood farm of their ocean and then try to catch the seafood

Ed (17:22)

I’m curious when you say seafood farm, like in English that sounds like it is actually a farm underwater. Is that what you mean? Or does it just means like that’s where they go and harvest things from the wild? Is it, is it natural or is it done by people? The seafood farm.

Sora (17:44)

There are some places for natural stuff, but also there’s some designated ocean for woman diver union. So they put baby abalone or baby conch and then they grow that place.

Ed (17:52)

okay. Right. Okay. Got you. So you’ve done the, Haenyeo experiences and is this part of a school or some kind of a formal, training institution?

Sora (18:08)

I think now in Jeju we have two women divers school and some of them have their Haenyeo experience also like other Haenyeo union they have experience program but we have two main women divers school by the government it’s because now all of these most of these Haenyeo they are getting older and older and we have like significant decline of the number of women divers now but the thing is, we

Sora (18:47)

young woman we don’t want to do like too harsh job for our life so there are not many people who want to become a woman diver so the government is trying what

Ed (18:57)

Wait Wait, wait, So you are saying that modern Korean women don’t want to do housework in the morning, then go out to the sea to dive in cold water all day, then come how to do more housework? And look after children? You guys are not signing up for that?

Sora (19:12)

No, no no no no no no no no no no no no so I think those women in the past they did like these hard difficult life and they don’t want to give the same life to their daughter

Sora (19:34)

So it changed a lot. think it’s because of those moms. And of course, because of that, lots of daughter who has their mom as a woman diver, they don’t want to become a woman diver because they saw all of these difficult life. So lots of woman diver, they sent their children, especially daughter to the university to have better life. So it changed it a lot.

Ed (20:01)

Right, and sometimes they go as they go all the way to Seoul, right? And then once you study there and you work there and then maybe get married, you’re not coming back except to visit on like Seolal or Chuseok, how many Haenyeo are there left? Do you know?

Sora (20:10)

Nowadays, I think it’s around 3,000. but most of them are in their 60s, 70s, 90 % of them are over 60. So only 10 % are like 30, 40, 50. So back in the 1960s, 70s, we had like lots of haenyeo. It was peak time. So that time it was around like 15,000 or 20,000.

Ed (20:47)

So why don’t you become a Haenyeo?

Sora (20:49)

I’m actually planning to apply this year to Women Divers School. Yeah, yeah.

Ed (20:52)

what? Okay. okay.

Sora (20:56)

So for the woman diver school, there’s two different courses. The first one is for beginner and then after finishing the course, you can apply for the second course which is to become a professional woman diver. But the thing is…

Sora (21:14)

To do the beginner course is easy. But to do the second course, to be a professional one, you have to be accepted by all of the members of the Women Diver Union. So it’s kind of difficult if you are not from Jeju or if you don’t have family.

Sora (21:39)

family member who was a woman diver.

Ed (21:42)

would sponsor you into the group. So here’s a very stupid question. The training course is for women only, right?

Sora (21:51)

I think there are a few men, a few men because we do have now Haenam

Sora (21:57)

I just want to say, but actually we had a foreigner in the school. Woman, Poland, Poland woman.

Ed (22:01)

women. Okay. Polish it’s kind of sad that, in 20, 30 years, the idea of Haenyeos will just become something that we see in the museums or maybe like a small number who go out there and continue to practice for heritage and cultural reasons. But the concept of a Haenyeo actually harvesting seafood for, to support the family or to sell to the restaurants.

Sora (22:21)

Like make living

Ed (22:30)

Yeah, that will stop in the next 20 or 30 years. So this really is like the last chapter, I guess, of the Haenyeo story.

Soraya (22:37)

whenever I take my guests to the museum, sometimes they don’t know anything about woman diver. But when they come to this museum, they are so happy to learn about this new culture for them. And they are really amazed by those women.

Ed (22:57)

that’s why for me anyway, the Haenyeo Museum will be one of the top 10 places that you have to go if it’s your first time in Jeju.

Soraya (23:06)

I agree, yeah.

     </details>
      <details id="e-n-accordion-item-9494" class="e-n-accordion-item" >

Handy Korean with Sora Ssaem (쌤)

Ed (23:15)

And now we’ve reached the part of our show where we’re going to, as always, share some very useful Korean phrases that will be very helpful for when you visit Jeju and of course for the rest of Korea. We call it Handy Korean with Sora Ssaem 샘!

Ed (23:35)

It’s pretty sad, when you need to cheer for yourself. So Sora, what are we going to share with our audience today?

Soraya (23:41)

Today we’re gonna talk about how to get the attention like excuse me pardon me like this Usually we just say 저기요 저기요

Ed (23:52)

how about if you’re trying to pass somebody? So, when I was learning Korean, I was taught that, even though in, English, you can just say, excuse me. but depending on the context in Korean, we will say a different thing. if we’re trying to get the attention, we will say, 저기요 but if I’m trying to get out of a very

Ed (24:10)

crowded bus or train in Seoul for instance. I wouldn’t say 저기요 I would say 잠시만요, Right? So even

Soraya (24:12)

Right, right. Usually we say 잠시만요, 잠깐만요. So, 잠시만요, 잠깐만요 literally means just a moment, a short time. Just a moment and then just please make me go out. 잠시만요, 잠깐만요.

Ed (24:35)

Yeah, let me, let me pass you or, you know, let me get by you.

Ed (24:41)

So I kind of want to link it back to our previous session of Handy Korean with Sora Ssaem 쌤 because last time we taught people how to say, 이게 얼마에요? So now we can add it together, right? How would that sound if you add

Ed (25:00)

Today’s with last week’s 이거 얼마예요 Sora

Soraya (25:04)

So you can just get the attention first and then ask the question how much. So you can say 저기요, 이거 얼마예요? 저기요, 티켓 얼마예요?

Ed (25:13)

Excuse me, how much How is this ticket? How much If you would like to find out more about the phrases that we covered today, which is 잠시만요 and 잠깐만요, as well as 저기요, to mean like different kinds of excuse me, just check out our show notes for more details. And if today’s show has gotten you thinking like, huh, I really want to say 잠시만요 in Jeju, we’ve got something for you.
