In this episode, Ed and Soraya rank the 10 biggest tourist traps on the island—places that are famous, often crowded, sometimes overpriced, and may leave you wondering “that’s it?” Number one offender: Mysterious Road, an optical illusion that doesn’t always work and isn’t worth the drive. They also cover why Jeju’s famous black pork tastes the same as regular pork (even locals choose white pork), why the traditional markets are overpriced for what you get, and why Udo Island’s charm has faded under the weight of tour bus commissions. Some places make the list as 50-50 calls—Osulloc Tea Museum has beautiful tea fields but a food-court atmosphere, and Jusangjeolli Cliff is genuinely stunning but requires patience to navigate the crowds. Cheonjiyeon is nice for an evening walk; Jeongbang is unique (flows directly into the sea).

Udo Island (우도) — Once beautiful, now overrun by tour groups due to driver commissions. That’s the first piece. So what’s so mysterious about the

     </details>
      <details id="e-n-accordion-item-9491" class="e-n-accordion-item" >

Traps 1-3 — Mysterious Road, Rocks & Waterfalls

Soraya (03:16)

the worst. Please, never go. Never ever. Because… no, no, don’t go, please. basically in the Mysterious Road, looks like going up the But actually when you put something on the road, it goes down. It’s kind of illusion. And Sometimes it’s not working well. because when I have this on my itinerary from the agency, I feel like, what do I do if it’s not working? So I always prepare Coca-Cola, can so it can roll easily. So if it’s like water bottle, it’s never gonna work.

Ed (04:04)

Yes. Right? There are others that we didn’t agree on, but we both definitely agreed that Mysterious Road is the stupidest, dumbest thing to do in Jeju. Especially if you go there just for the Mysterious Road. You just wasted all that time.

Soraya (04:14)

Mm-hmm. Yeah, 100 percent, 100 percent. Just for this? No.

Ed (04:27)

So the next one I see in English in our notes … a rock. why don’t you take it from here?

Soraya (04:30)

I mean, in Jeju, there are a lot of rocks and some of them are really beautiful. If it’s nearby, maybe you can just walk. But if it’s far away, one hour, two hours, then it’s not worth to spend your time and money and effort. for example, the Jeju city near the airport, there’s one rock named Yongduam (용두암). which is the volcanic rock but looks like a dragon. yeah, and actually some people like it but I don’t see it as a primary place to go. If it’s nearby, you can go but don’t go only for that. And then the one in the south near Seogwipo city, there is Oedolgae (외돌개). which means lonely rock. It’s very tall rock in front of the ocean. It’s beautiful but I don’t think you should go one and a half hour to only to see this rock.

Ed (06:07)

I guess to summarize, if it’s easy to get to, if you’re already there, maybe, but don’t go all the way just for that. Okay, what else do we have next?

Soraya (06:18)

And number three is Cheonjiyeon Waterfall (천지연폭포). And actually in Jeju we have three waterfalls in the south, Seogwipo City we have many waterfalls and then there are three popular ones and they are beautiful but they are very small, cute. So if you ever tried any other waterfall like Iguazu or like Victoria Falls, Niagara then you will be like, is this all? anyway, Cheonjiyeon Waterfall, it became popular because it’s part of UNESCO, like Geopark. It’s nice to walk around at night because they open until late. So if you’re staying in the south, it’s good to just walk around at night

Ed (07:08)

what are the other two waterfalls?

Soraya (07:15)

So the second one is Cheonjeyeon Waterfall (천제연폭포). It’s similar, like very similar name. But Cheonjeyeon is even smaller. Yeah, even smaller. But there is three different waterfall. And the first one is actually become waterfall only when it’s rain. Actually, the first one is really beautiful. The color of water is really beautiful. then the background of the waterfall is the columnars.

Ed (07:54)

And then the third one, and I don’t mean the third step, I mean the third waterfall.

Soraya (07:56)

So the third one is Jeongbang (정방폭포) Waterfall. Actually, this is the only waterfall that comes from river to the sea directly. And it’s also, I think, 20 meters, 22, 23 meters.

Ed (08:23)

number three. Udo Island is a small island right next to Jeju Island. So it’s island of an island. Right. So from like Seongsan Sunrise Peak, there’s a ferry. So it takes like 15, 20 minutes to go to Udo Island. And it used to be very beautiful. And a lot of people liked it. But nowadays, it’s kind of changed, I think. The atmosphere is not like before

Ed (09:07)

you mentioned earlier, Sora, that the nature is still very beautiful, But what you did allude to was the ambiance of the island has changed. Is that because of bigger tour groups now or like right right

Soraya (09:19)

It is, right? Because some drivers told me that if you take a big tourist group to Udo Island, you get a commission. So lots of drivers want to take them to Udo Island. And then usually, when we have big tourist groups when we have like many of them the atmosphere is not really you know like authentic. Right, so it’s kind of pity for me because it used to be very beautiful place so yeah but nowadays

Ed (10:00)

Yeah, I remember like when you go to the top of the mountain, there’s a lighthouse museum right under the lighthouse. That view was very beautiful. You can look back at Songsan Ilchubong (성산 일출봉), Songsan Sunrise Peak and the mainland. On a clear day, you even see Hallasan. But that part is hard to get to because you have to actually climb all the way up. So there was fewer people there, but in the lower lying areas, it’s just really crowded

Ed (10:30)

So yeah, wasn’t my favorite. And in case the audience is looking at me going like, “Ed really hates Jeju.” No, I love Jeju. We’re just talking about the parts that were not great. OK, so what’s next on our list?

Soraya (10:33)

So number five is Dongmun Market (제주동문시장) and maybe Olle Market (매일올레시장) in Seogwipo, like the so-called traditional market.

Ed (10:56)

Right. so Dongmun Market is in Jeju City in the Daily Market is in Seogwipo which is in the south.

Soraya (11:04)

In Seogwipo. Right, right. So the market itself, It’s good to just look around for like 20, 30 minutes, but it’s also not like to go destination because there’s nothing really special. around. But I mean, it was actually just a traditional market to sell like festivals, fruits and fish. And now plus we have like food truck. And they sell some, you know, like Jeju special black pork. or the abalone or some seafood. And we also think it’s kind of overpriced. Because with 10,000 Won, you can have one full meal in the restaurant. But in the market, you get just one skewer.

Ed (11:50)

Yeah, 10,000 Won is around 7 US dollars. Yeah, you could literally get a full meal with great side dishes in a regular restaurant. But yeah, in Dongmun market and Olleh Market in Seogwipo that won’t get you very far at all. I like that you mentioned black pork earlier because that’s actually next on our list. Black pork. Yes. So tell us about this famous black pork.

Soraya (12:33)

in Jeju, one of the Jeju’s specialty is black pork. Meaning the pig with the black fur. And this is like species. traditionally, Jeju people, they grow this black pig at home, especially in the toilet. So the pigs are more eating. the… poo… from the human and it will…

Ed (13:09)

Poop. You can say it. Poop. Yes, audience Dong is poop in Korean.

Soraya (13:19)

And it was the way of eco-friendly living in Jeju. Yeah. Right, circle, I guess. in Jeju City, we have one street full of black pork restaurant, barbecue place.

Ed (13:25)

Right. It’s like a circle, right? Like humans eat stuff, humans poop, pigs eat poop, pigs poop, and then the poop is used to like fertilize plants, and then the cycle goes on and on. Right?

Ed (13:48)

Right. And that’s called a Black Pork Street, I guess in English and in Korean is 흑돼지 거리. yeah, it’s.

Ed (13:58)

I’ve had it a few times. So the first time I had it, was like, no, this wasn’t okay. Maybe I, because as a tourist or a traveler, I went to the wrong place or something like that. So the next time like I actually made friends with, the Airbnb host and said, Hey, you know, why don’t we go for black pork it’s my treat, but you pick the place.

Ed (14:18)

And so she picked a really good place I was very excited because okay, now we have the real black pock and it wasn’t in the famous tourist area. It was like a small little place that was run by Haenyeo And we went there, I was like, that’s it. Okay then, it’s just like my first one. And then the third time I had it with you and Jayden and my cousin when we went to Jeju.

Ed (14:45)

I’m trying to say is I’ve had black pork a couple of times now and it’s just I cannot tell the difference.

Soraya (14:50)

Actually lots of Jeju native people, don’t eat black pork. Because in Jeju, like local restaurant, they sometimes sell like black pork and white pork. And lots of Jeju residents, always choose like white pork.

Ed (14:54)

Right. And to be clear, white pork and black pork they look the same,

Ed (15:16)

Right, so by the time you see the meat, they look the same.

Soraya (15:19)

but you see the fur sometimes yeah because go sell because you some 삼겹살 and 오겹살

Ed (15:24)

Right, 삼겹살 is three layer fat and 오겹살 is five layer fat.

Soraya (15:35)

Right, so those five layers include the skin.

Ed (15:42)

I see. then you see the, so, so that’s how you know it’s real black pork. It’s got black fur on it. That sounds terrible. That sounds disgusting. Okay. So if the audience hasn’t figured it out yet, I’m not a fan of like spending more money for the, what is perceived to me anyway, to say it tastes the same. So yeah, it’s black pork is. Try it once I guess, but. I wouldn’t go out of your way to try it. It’s not going to be any better than regular pork Okay. So what’s next on our list?

     </details>
      <details id="e-n-accordion-item-9493" class="e-n-accordion-item" >

Traps 7-10 — Cafe Streets, Folk Village, Cliffs & Tea Museum

Soraya (16:09)

Okay, so number seven is Aewol Cafe Street Also Hamdeok (함덕해수욕장) But actually those beaches in Aewol and Hamdeok are really beautiful, but what I mean is the Cafe Street. Because nowadays the Cafe Street becomes so popular. so many like overpriced cafe and lots of tourists just like taking photo in front of the places so

Ed (16:59)

Right. So they typically they buy a drink and then they spend like five minutes taking a photo of the drink in their hand. And then that doesn’t sound terrible, but then you multiply by those people doing it at the same time, all trying to find their own angles. That makes it look like they’re the only ones there, but they’re not. That’s crazy. So when you say overpriced, like how much are we talking about?

Soraya (17:24)

Coffee can be like 10,000 Won

Ed (17:28)

Okay. That is ridiculous. Like if you go for like a regular, like a, like a Mega Coffee or Compose Coffee or Paik Da Bang Coffee is like, I think right now is around 1,700, 1700 Won

Soraya (17:29)

like usually like in an overpriced cafe like Americano is like 7,000, 8,000. Because I don’t know, there’s like in Jeju, there’s like many like fancy, beautiful cafe. If you like to go like cafe hopping, then maybe it’s a good place to go. But if you just want to enjoy the view or relax, then it’s not the place.

Ed (18:21)

Right. Okay. And so is it the same for the other beach on the list? Is it also like a cafe kind of a situation?

Soraya (18:37)

Also, there’s a lot of cafes but Hamdeok nowadays also this beach is really really beautiful the color like it’s emerald Yeah, but the thing is now there are too many people also like tourist group comes to Hamdeok to visit there. So sometimes you see like big like cruise bus is coming to the beach and like 40, 50 people coming at once. Yeah.

Ed (19:10)

Aewol and Hamdeok Those are two of like many, many beaches. And so there are lot of other alternatives to go to where you can, you know, get the beauty of the beaches, but not the crowds. Moving on, we’ve got Seongeup Folk Village (성읍민속마을) So

Soraya (19:24)

Okay, so This one for me, I think it’s 50-50

Ed (19:35)

50 50 means maybe worth going, but maybe not. But they’re all very far away. They’re all very far away. Right. So.

Soraya (19:39)

Yeah right right so if you’re staying in the Seogwipo like south then maybe worth it maybe worth it yeah

Ed (19:53)

Okay. And it’s worth it because especially Seongeup Folk Village is people still live there, right?

Soraya (20:00)

Right, so this is a folk village where still people like living like around 60 people is living there. And this is actually a folk place from like Joseon dynasty and they preserve it, preserve them from the Joseon dynasty and you can actually see like traditional houses and the architecture also like if you enjoyed the K-drama, When Life Gives You Tangerines, you’re gonna see like something similar environment here.

Ed (20:38)

So I guess that’s why you say it’s 50-50. Like it’s a long way to get there. It can be crowded sometimes, but then at the same time, it is also pretty realistic and authentic Next on our list is Jusangjeolli (주상절리) cliff, which… Okay. So when I saw it, like, okay, I’m trying to like be less biased against it. I’ll talk about the good things. The good things is that it’s legitimately very beautiful. The hexagonal shapes of the rocks really reminded me of what I saw in Iceland. And so, and it’s hexagonal columns and it looks really amazing. It boggles your mind how nature can produce shapes like that. That’s the good part.

Ed (21:34)

The bad part there’s a lot more people. And so they’ve got like a narrow little platforms that they build. build a platform overlooking these columns and it’s almost always full of people. Sometimes I wonder if the platforms will actually hold will this collapse and all of us fall to our death? There’s so many people and everyone’s trying to take their own photos They all want to make it look like they’re the only ones there. It’s just, so it’s very stressful. then it’s like, and then they try to pushing and shoving you, especially if the tourists are from a certain country who have no manners. They’re like shoving you aside. It’s, it’s not pleasant. So yeah, it’s, it’s, At the same time, it is still very beautiful. And that’s why it’s not number one on the list of tourist traps. It’s like number nine is like, yeah, maybe it’s worth going to because it’s so beautiful, but maybe you have to pack a lot of patience. You have to pack in your bag patience and understanding and whatever. If you’re already feeling stressed and grumpy before you get there, you get even more stressed and grumpy. But if you pack…

Ed (22:43)

patience and kindness, maybe you can manage it because you’re going to get jostled around a little bit and yeah, but it is beautiful.

Soraya (22:49)

So the number 10 tourist trap is Osulluc Tea Museum (오설록 티 뮤지엄). For me, it’s also 50-50. can be very nice for someone, but it’s also kind of stressful because there are so many people. There’s tourist and also lots of school field trip bus is coming here, like every school bus. So you will hear High schoolers screaming at each other sometimes. But the thing is Osulloc is the biggest green tea farm in Jeju. And you’re gonna see like huge green tea fields and then there’s like Innisfree, the cosmetic shop and then the tea cafe and tea museum.

Ed (23:25)

Yeah! Yeah. Right. Yeah, they do not do justice to the word museum. It’s not a tea museum. like maybe like one or two exhibits and then it’s basically a part of the cafe itself. It’s part of the gift shop. Yeah.

Soraya (23:47)

Right, Yeah, the biggest part is gift shop and then to buy a green tea, maybe you have to line up like 10, 20 minutes to pay.

Soraya (24:15)

when you think of a tea place, should be like tranquil, relaxed, but this place is very tense. Right.

Ed (24:28)

Like sometimes you like, I remember when we went there we couldn’t get a place to sit when we ordered coffee. So we had to wait around for someone to leave. then normally Koreans will clean up after their own table when they leave, but not tourists from some countries. And they’ll leave a mess.

Ed (24:47)

And so the staff will obviously clean up, but then there’s so many tables that the staff don’t always have enough time. And so I, I mean, you know me, I’m perfectly fine cleaning up anyway. So I do it just to be able to sit down, but despite the efficiency of the Korean staff, it’s just not enough to cater to certain tourists who just

Ed (25:10)

Don’t give a shit about other people. They just don’t care Yeah

Soraya (25:13)

Right. It feels like very busy food court.

Ed (25:19)

Yes, that’s exactly the vibe. The vibe. You go there expecting a very tranquil tea house kind of vibe, you know, but then you end up going like, my gosh, I’m in the food court. It’s noisy. It’s like a of like people talking and yelling and it’s just not that fun.

Ed (25:40)

So that’s our list of 10 tourist traps.

Ed (25:47)

Earlier, I mentioned that Sora and I agreed on number one, Mysterious Road. What were the ones that we kind of didn’t agree on? we had to talk about it before we put it on the list. Do you remember?

Soraya (26:00)

I think Osulloc You told me number one was Osulloc and I was like Osulloc is some people yeah because some people like it right

Ed (26:04)

That’s true! You’re right! You’re right! Yeah, okay. Okay, so to be fair, that’s my bias. Instead of Mysterious Road, I was going to put Osulloc Tea Museum there. And then Sora talked me down from the cliff. It’s like, no, actually, you know, it’s quite nice. And the stuff like that. But I still want it on the list. And she’s like, okay, how about we put it on number 10? So that’s right. You’re right. Osulloc Tea Museum was definitely one that we did not agree on.

Soraya (26:19)

based on what other tourists says like sometimes people like Osulloc, Jusangjeolli or Folk Village but Mysterious Road really

Ed (26:42)

Yeah, even the tourists are like, what just happened? Like, what? So yeah, so those are our list of our top 10 tourist traps and I hope you find this useful. especially after we’ve covered in the previous episode the touristy places that were worth going to and so that kind of strikes a nice balance between the places that we feel are really worth going to but then also the darker side so to speak of the places that you should probably avoid

     </details>
      <details id="e-n-accordion-item-9494" class="e-n-accordion-item" >

Handy Korean with Sora Ssaem (쌤)

So here’s the part of the show where, as always, we share some essential Korean phrases that are gonna be very helpful for you when you visit Jeju, and of course Korea in general. We call it Handy Korean with Sora Ssaem (샘)!

Soraya (27:47)

Woo hoo hoo!

Ed (27:55)

So Sora, what are we going to share with our audience in today’s episode?

Soraya (27:56)

So today we’re gonna talk about the variation of yes and no. Because you’re gonna see lots of tourist trap in Jeju or in Korea, then you should say no for this. So we’re gonna talk about this. So the basic simple one, yes is ne, ne, n-e, n-e. But some of my students told me it sounds like “d” Because sometimes people make it like, I think because people want to make it sounds like cute, especially a young girls, do like, yeah, but it’s actually and “n” to say no,

Soraya (28:54)

So this is the formal one, yes and no. Then how do you say like casual one? There’s many variation, right?

Ed (28:54)

Yeah, so like honestly, I’m not the most comfortable speaking in casual Korean, 반 말 as it’s called, because I spent like years learning 존댓 말 the formal version. But yes, you can say yes. It’s just like making little noises like like all that works as yes. maybe, maybe is for guys and is for women. Is that,

Soraya (29:24)

No, no, doesn’t matter. also use just the sounds.

Ed (29:29)

Yeah, honestly, very first time I learned Korean about maybe four years ago, the original very formal version had like a, 예 예 which I thought was like, yeah, it sounds like English. Yeah. So I started using that and I realized that actually that’s very formal. And it’s usually like when someone

Ed (30:00)

someone who’s more senior than you talks to you and you want to say yes to that person who’s above you in rank, you will say, 예 Or maybe at the work or in the army, like, 예. It’s like, so, so

Ed (30:13)

though we talked about how the informal. Yes is or but what is the informal no?

Soraya (30:19)

informal no is 아니?

Ed (30:28)

So you just drop the last yo sound at the end. So it goes from 아니요 to 아니

Ed (30:38)

So I will just say 아니요 to all these tourist traps on Jeju. So that is… Yeah, 아니요 Mysterious road, 아니요

Ed (30:53)

if you’d like to see these phrases of different versions, variations of yes and no, we covered today.
