How was it Ed?

Ed (00:54)

Well, you know, having been to Jeju so many times in the last three years and having done multiple trips, I’ve everything from super swanky hotels with my wife to a room with cockroaches in the blankets to a small place away from Jeju. I think I have a pretty rich spectrum of experiences staying in Jeju. yeah, I think today’s going to be a good episode. And so let’s get right into it. so Sora, if I was booking my trip right now and I need to find a base of operations, where do you recommend I book my hotels at?

Soraya (01:31)

So basically we have two big cities in Jeju. So in the northern part is Jeju City with the airport and then the port, the cruise ship come to Jeju. So that is the most like busiest popular area. Like we have everything in the northern city where I live. So if you want to make a base, it would be a good option for the north area, Jeju city. And the second big city is in the south, which is Seogwipo city. It’s also, it has everything in it, but more tranquil atmosphere. And you have like beautiful beach around you as well. if you need a little bit of city vibe, then those two are a good option. But if you want to have more beach town or the forest, then you may want to go deep inside Jeju, you may want to go like east or west area or mid mountain near the mountain.

Ed (02:39)

so what I’m hearing from you is like, most people probably want to base themselves out of Jeju City especially if they only have three or four days, I guess it makes sense to just stay in Jeju City and either rent a car or take the public transportation to go to other parts of the island. and then maybe if they have seven days or something, maybe it makes sense to have some of it in Jeju City and then some of it in Seogwipo City. And then for those who really want to get a very authentic feel of Jeju Island then maybe we’re looking at one of the beach towns or maybe in the forest somewhere mid mountain. Am I kind of hearing you right?

Soraya (03:22)

Right. And also I want to add one more thing. Like if you have rental car, then you can just put your luggage in the car. So you can stay one night in the north and then maybe you can make a circle around the island. So like north one night and then east one night, south one night and the west one night. And then you go back.

Ed (03:35)

Okay, yeah that works for some people who don’t mind staying one night in each place and then there are other people, my wife who hate having to pack and unpack and pack and unpack. And so we tend to stay longer in one place. it really depends on your approach and your perspective on packing and unpacking. so that is how we look at where to stay on the island. We’ve got north, south, we’ve got beach towns, which can be anywhere on the coast and then mid mountain,

     </details>
      <details id="e-n-accordion-item-9491" class="e-n-accordion-item" >

Budget Accommodations — Hostels, Motels & Love Hotels

Ed (04:11)

So then let’s talk about the different types of accommodations that one can find on Jeju Island. Obviously there’s hotels, but there’s actually a whole range of availability and options. Can you talk us through what these options are?

Soraya (04:25)

So first of all, okay, let’s talk about the low budget first. So if you have low budget, there’s an option for hostel, like bed can be like 20 US dollar. But if you don’t want the a little more expensive, but you get your own room, it’s gonna be around. Like 30, 40 US dollar. How much was the room with the cockroach Ed?

Ed (04:52)

Yeah, well, I want to add that the cockroaches were for free. and to clarify, there weren’t giant ones, were like tiny ones, but still it was still. That one was like twenty five dollars and it was actually very close to your house.

Soraya (04:59)

Good. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. was very cheap, so yeah.

Ed (05:10)

maybe I had to pay extra $5 to have no cockroaches

Soraya (05:13)

No, cockroaches Yeah. So that’s a low budget hotel, but we don’t really say that for hotel. We say that motel, which is like cheaper hotel or love hotel in Korean.

Ed (05:21)

Okay. Oh, let me get back to that love hotel in a short while, but I’m a little bit confused because living in America, motel usually is, it means motor. hotel and it’s like a combination of the two words to become motel. So typically in the United States and even in Canada, you would drive right up to the room and then get out of the car and walk to your room. That’s a motel and it’s typically found near major freeways or highways in Canada and America. And I think maybe some parts of Europe, I’m not sure. But that was not at all what it was in Jeju. It was basically a low end budget hotel there was nowhere to park I don’t think or if there was a place to park it was not yeah it was no parking right so maybe not so good for if you have a car yeah it could be especially in Jeju City parking can can be difficult but then you mentioned love hotel Le Bu hotel is that as as interesting as I think it is

Soraya (06:09)

No, no park, no, no parking. Yeah. Yeah, so love hotel means… I think it’s the same meaning, right?

Ed (06:30)

Yes, but I’m trying to get you to say it.

Soraya (06:34)

if you want to have more, I don’t know, privacy? No, not the privacy. It’s more like one night stands. I don’t know how to explain. How to explain?

Ed (06:44)

Yeah, one night stands. that’s, I guess a one night stand is exactly what it is. I think in a place like Korea where a lot of grownups still live with their parents, sometimes it can be difficult to get some alone time with your loved ones. and then not everybody has a car. So you might need to have a place to. I guess the technical term is to hook up. so a love hotel is essentially a place where you can hook up overnight, but at least it’s overnight because there are some places in the world where the love hotels is like you book by the hour, which is kind of gross.

     </details>
      <details id="e-n-accordion-item-9492" class="e-n-accordion-item" >

Mid-Range to Specialty Accommodations

huh. then in Korea, have different kind of accommodation. Like pension, It’s like Airbnb with the beach or in the forest, like a nice view.

Ed (07:37)

So basically just like a rental home. but it will also have typically a kitchen, place for a dining room. Right.

Soraya (07:43)

Right, think the key difference is the kitchen that you can cook

Ed (07:48)

What else besides the pension?

Soraya (07:50)

and also we have… minbak (민박) like when you walk through Jeju, you’re gonna see like… minbak sign in Korean on like just normal house, meaning they rent room for you, for traveler. But actually those… minbak like most of them, they converted to Airbnb, but some of them like the elders… who doesn’t know how to use like online bookings or Airbnb, they just left like the sign outside, but there’s not many guests coming. So if you want to book those kind of like real minbak you have to go there, talk to them, or you have to call to book the place.

Ed (08:34)

When I was hiking the Jeju Olleh Trail one time, I stayed with a 할머니 or 할망 in her room. And it was actually not really, no, not her room, her house. And it was just a spare room, which I imagine used to belong to one of her children who maybe moved to Seoul or something. sleep on the floor, Korean style, she made me breakfast the next day, which I did not expect some of these small towns and villages, the only place to stay is like there’s no hotel there. What’s next?

Soraya (09:03)

So hotel is just, you know about the hotel, but hotel can have like different variation. like we talk about low end from around like 40, 50 US until very expensive hotel.

Ed (09:17)

in, Jeju city. You’ll see like two, twin towers, in, I think it was called new Jeju. I think that’s the Hyatt, Is that considered high end,

Soraya (09:26)

I think Hyatt, like in the north, like in Jeju City, Hyatt is the most… high end hotel. I think it’s five star.

Ed (09:32)

Okay. it’s probably the most crowded part of Jeju in that area. Yeah. Right.

Soraya (09:37)

Right, Because in the Jeju city, we have two different towns, like New Jeju and then like Old Town Jeju. I’m living in Old Town of Jeju. So it’s less people and we have like older buildings. But still it has kind of nice atmosphere. And then New Jeju, they have more higher building, more restaurants, more cafe, more shops.

Ed (09:57)

Right. that’s more like Seoul Seoul So that’s the hotels is that the entire range of places to stay?

Soraya (10:11)

And we have special accommodation, For example, like temple stay, you can actually sleep over in a Buddhist temple, which is very

Ed (10:21)

Mm-hmm.

Soraya (10:22)

So you can actually choose like different program. You can do like resting program. So you can just sleep until eight, nine. But one. You’re going to wake up at four and do the meditation and then the bow and then cleaning with the monk, like many different programs.

Ed (10:41)

Right, and I think we should cover this in a later episode with more depth. You’ve been on a temple stay right? Okay.

Soraya (10:46)

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. I think a few, like, four five times.

Ed (10:52)

What’s next, Sora?

Soraya (10:53)

And as you know, like Jeju is also famous for yoga. So if you are into yoga, most of the famous teachers are in Jeju. Yes, so lots of like yoga teachers, they come to Jeju to practice. And also we have many wellness resorts these days. So you can actually have yoga and wellness retreats in Jeju as well.

Ed (11:20)

Those sound expensive.

Soraya (11:21)

I mean it’s not cheap but I checked one resort like yoga retreat it was around hundred fifty US dollar per night. But with those accommodations, you will get some yoga classes and meditations and tea time, like those kind of many different programs.

Ed (11:39)

Okay. when I was hiking the Jeju Island trail, like I saw these recreational vehicles or RVs. how much do these costs? Like I imagined it would be quite expensive in Jeju.

Soraya (11:49)

Of course, it depends on how big is the car and then the option like the fridge or these kind of things you have in the car. But it’s usually from 100 US dollar to 200 US dollar per day.

Ed (11:59)

Right, so but you’re actually combining the cost of the car with the cost of the accommodations. And I guess RVs or I think it’s called camping car in Korean. they actually consume a lot more gasoline or petroleum and so you also have to consider the price of that, right? But beyond that, I guess it’s quite interesting to be able to just drive around the coast or into the forest and to the mid mountain. can you just park anywhere or do you have to go to a designated parking area?

Soraya (12:25)

Right. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Actually, we don’t have much regulation yet. like some of them, they just park in front of the ocean. I mean, if there is a sign for no camping car, then no. But still, we don’t have much like this. So actually, people just park and then overnight.

Ed (12:57)

and then there’s also camping cars that don’t move right like they turn an old camping car into a I guess a hotel or a motel or a minpak or something you can just rent and stay there

Soraya (13:04)

Mm-hmm. Yeah, like be… So actually in the West Coast where we always go for dolphin, there is a place where you can rent a camping car but not for driving, staying overnight.

     </details>
      <details id="e-n-accordion-item-9493" class="e-n-accordion-item" >

The Korean "Wet Bathroom" — A Survival Guide

Ed (13:21)

So that covers like the range of the types of accommodation that you can find on Jeju. I wanted to come back to the motels, or the lower cost hotels. Because coming from outside of Korea, these older hotels are designed before the opening of Korea to the international tourist market. And so the way the design is very Korean. is similar to what you will see when you go to a Korean apartment. And so I would like to introduce you if you’re new to Korea to the idea of a wet bathroom. the whole bathroom is designed to get wet when you shower. So we’re looking at like if you’re like a violent showerer, then you’re going to like everything’s wet. The walls are wet. The toilet is wet. The sink is wet. The mirrors are wet. The doors are wet. Everything is designed to be wet.

Ed (14:11)

Even the comes with a little flap to protect the power outlet from getting wet. The toilet paper roll is actually covered up partially so that it doesn’t get wet. Everything is designed to be wet. there is no glass partition to keep the shower water in. There’s no shower curtain. The whole thing is designed to get wet.

Soraya (14:19)

Okay. Mm-hmm. until now, I didn’t notice that it was so different. Because for me, to have the flip cover for the outlet and then the toilet paper cover was so normal. But then now I’m thinking, we don’t have that in another country.

Ed (14:45)

Mm-hmm. Yeah. And so with a wet bathroom comes the idea of a bathroom sandals or bathroom slippers. So you have to wear slippers in the bathroom, especially when the floor is wet. And then the third thing about a wet bathroom is that sometimes there is no separate. a shower head, as in you may be used to like there being a faucet for the sink to wash your hands and then a separate control for the water for the shower. In many Korean homes and Korean older hotels, the water comes from the same faucet in the sink.

Ed (15:28)

So if you want to wash your hands, you wash your hands. If you want to shower, you will like flip a switch. and you divert the water. You shunt the water to the shower, which sounds fine until you forget to switch it back. And so it has happened to me before where like I’m showering and then the next day, next morning, I want to like wash my hands.

Ed (15:48)

or brush my teeth and I turn it on and if I’m not careful the shower is now pouring and if I’m lucky the shower is facing away but if the shower head is facing at me I’m now wet so you need to watch out for that

Ed (16:00)

If you’re staying in an old Korean hotel, just make sure that you realize that sometimes you need to switch the water back and forth, it just takes you one time of getting wet to learn never to do that again. So the next thing about older current hotels is the towels, the towels like are small. Koreans basically use one or maybe two hand towels to be the towel. So if you’re used to having a big towel to wrap around your body and then you walk out, you’re not going to find that. going to have to bring your own big towel to Korea because… almost all and even some new hotels they only give you the hand towels. Sora, you probably don’t realize how special Korean bathrooms are until you travel, right?

Soraya (16:50)

Right, really I didn’t realize I mean I didn’t know the concept of dry bathroom and then wet bathroom because for me really yeah and also for those towel like until I get foreign visitor in Jeju

Soraya (17:12)

I didn’t notice that it was a problem that having just one hand towel. I was like, why not? We always have towel for showers. And she was complaining like, I can’t get all of my body with only one towel. was like, huh?

Ed (17:29)

So then another thing, if you’re hotels is that, you will find like another cloth, another fabric next to the towel, And that’s actually to scrub your back. that’s like, yeah. And so.

Ed (17:46)

That is not a towel, that is actually a washcloth that it’s really designed for the back. So yeah, Korean bathrooms that once you get used to it, it’s not a problem. And to me, at least to me, It allows me to access very low cost motels that are of pretty good quality, often in good locations in a city. So I stayed in a couple that’s very near Dongmun market. I stayed in a few that’s close to Jeju City Hall, is like, Jeju City Hall is where a lot of restaurants and places are. And so yeah, it’s for me.

Ed (18:23)

It was very well worth it to get used to this different wet bathroom concept just to be able to get a low price at a good location. So for me, it was a no brainer.

Soraya (18:33)

you know when Koreans travel to outside Korea travel abroad they always bring their sandals or slippers so they can use it in the bathroom because there’s no slipper in the bathroom And like a few days ago, one lady asked me she needs one more hand towel because for Korean ladies, after they wash their hair, they like to tie up their hair with the face towel.

Ed (18:59)

Yeah. Right.

Soraya (18:59)

But with the shower towel, it’s too big. can’t do it.
